In the field of aesthetic medicine, fillers are used to smooth out annoying wrinkles or restore volume to the face.
There are different fillers, so the choice of filler material should be determined according to the patient’s individual needs.
Resorbable: The material is completely and naturally broken down by the body.
Slowly absorbable: Degradation takes place over a longer period of time and therefore offers a longer-lasting effect.
Semi-permanent or permanent: These fillers remain permanently in the tissue as the body cannot break them down on its own.
Absorbable fillers include hyaluronic acid and collagen.
These fillers are particularly suitable for smoothing wrinkles, furrows and small imperfections. These fillers can also be used to build up volume and emphasize lips, cheeks and other parts of the face.
Both calcium hydroxyapatite and polylactic acid are considered to be slowly absorbable fillers.
Slowly absorbable fillers are suitable for deeper blemishes that require more filling. These fillers are ideal for treatments where restoration of facial volume is desired or for patients suffering from pronounced atrophy (tissue loss).
These types of filler should not be used for lip corrections or for superficial wrinkles. The use of these fillers would produce an unnatural result.
The most common fillers with semi-permanent to permanent effects are PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), HEMA (hydroxyethyl methacrylate), PMA (polyacrylamide) or Gore-tex.
The use of semi-permanent or permanent fillers is useful for reconstructing skin volume and correcting serious skin defects.
Collagen is a structural protein found naturally in the skin and body, which is responsible for the firmness and elasticity of the tissue. With increasing age, collagen production in the body decreases, which leads to skin ageing.
In aesthetic medicine, bovine collagen is often used for collagen filler injections. The result usually lasts three to six months.
Hyaluron or hyaluronic acid is a substance produced naturally in the body that is responsible for moisturizing and elasticity of the skin.
From the age of 25, the body’s own hyaluronic acid production decreases and the skin loses moisture and elasticity, resulting in the formation of fine lines that become wrinkles over time.
Low molecular weight: Particularly suitable for correcting upper lip wrinkles and wrinkles around the eyes. Has a short duration of action of two to three months.
Medium molecular weight: Particularly suitable for lip filling and treating deep wrinkles. The duration of effect is longer and lasts approx. four to six months.
High molecular weight: Used for the treatment of nasolabial folds, cheek augmentation and to correct facial volume. It has a long duration of action and lasts for eight to twelve months.
Fillers offer a safe and effective method of treating wrinkles and filling volume – provided they are selected individually and applied professionally.
