Cyst
A cyst is an encapsulated cavity in tissue that can occur in various parts of the body and can be filled with cyst fluid such as sebum or pus. Cysts are never malignant and often only lead to symptoms when they reach a certain size. In dermatology, the epidermoid cyst is the most common type of cyst.
Diagnosis
The eye of a qualified dermatologist is usually sufficient to recognize a hemispherical epidermoid cyst or an atheroma on the surface of the skin.
CAUSES & DEVELOPMENT
Cysts are caused by blocked sebaceous glands, acne, trauma or immunosuppressive drugs.
Therapy
The mere presence of a cyst is not usually an indication for treatment. However, if the cyst becomes inflamed or greatly enlarged, a minor surgical procedure to remove it is recommended. The cyst and capsule are removed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis.
