Finasteride & dutasteride: topical & systemic

Improve hair growth with 5α-reductase hammers

Finasteride & dutasteride inhibit the enzyme 5α-reductase. They are found in various organs of the human body. Their function is to convert the sex hormone testosterone into a more biologically active form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). On the scalp, DHT promotes hair loss in cases of hereditary hair loss. Both active ingredients block this process and thus prevent hair thinning.

DESCRIPTION

Dutasteride is a new generation 5α-reductase inhibitor that is injected directly into the scalp and does not have to be taken systemically in tablet form. Finasteride is also a 5α-reductase inhibitor that has been approved for many years for the treatment of hereditary hair loss in tablet form. Since 2022, there has also been approval for local therapy with finasteride in the form of a dosing spray.

Various studies

Various studies show that treatment with 5α-reductase inhibitors improves hair quantity, length and growth.

In Germany, dutasteride is not yet approved for this indication due to a lack of comprehensive studies and can therefore only be prescribed by doctors for off-label use. In some European countries, dutasteride is approved for the treatment of hereditary alopecia areata.

Dutasteride is injected into the scalp by a doctor under local anesthesia. Headaches and a feeling of pressure on the scalp may occur after the treatment.
