Fungal infections

Fungal infections are among the most common diseases in dermatology. Many diseases of the skin, nails and intestines are caused by fungal infections. Many scaly skin lesions are caused by fungal infections. Fungal infections can affect any area of the skin, including the scalp, oral mucosa and genitalia or nails.

DEVELOPMENT

Like bacteria and viruses, fungi occur everywhere in the body and in the environment in a benign form. If the balance of the skin is disturbed or other influences play a role, this can lead to unpleasant, itchy and scaly skin changes in the form of a fungal infection. Infection can occur directly through contact with infected skin or indirectly via contaminated surfaces.

Diagnosis

If a fungal infection is suspected, cultures are taken in the mycology laboratory to confirm the results and thus enable the most targeted therapy possible.

Treatment

Most skin fungi can be treated with special creams or solutions. If it is nail fungus, tablets or laser nail treatment may be necessary.
