Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating

Hyperhidrosis is the uncontrollable, excessive sweating that is no longer physiological. More sweat is produced on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and especially in the armpits than is required for normal regulation of body temperature. However, other areas of the body can also be affected, as our sweat glands are located on almost the entire surface of the body. Depending on its severity, excessive sweating can be very stressful for those affected.

CAUSES

For proper treatment, it is important to get to the bottom of the cause of the excessive sweating. There are two forms of hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis is present when there is no obviously recognizable cause or accompanying symptoms. Above all, stress of any kind (e.g. anxiety or excitement) leads to increased sweating due to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system.
Secondary hyperhidrosis refers to excessive sweating that occurs as a concomitant symptom of another illness, such as thyroid disease, psychiatric illness, diabetes mellitus, hormonal changes, cancer or medication.

Treatment

Fortunately, there are various treatment options for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. The treatment spectrum includes both external medication, such as the application of special creams, and medication in tablet form, as well as laser procedures and minor surgical interventions.
Treatment with botulinum toxin is considered a quick and simple treatment for excessive sweating. The active ingredient blocks the stimulation of the sweat glands. It can be applied to the armpits, hands and feet with a duration of action of up to six months. Sweating slowly returns after this time, but usually to a lesser extent than before. This treatment can be repeated at regular intervals.
