Photodynamic therapy in Cologne
Would you like an effective treatment for your skin that addresses both aesthetic and dermatological problems? Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers a versatile solution with numerous areas of application.
It is ideal for the treatment of actinic keratoses, superficial basal cell carcinomas, acne vulgaris and warts as well as for the targeted regeneration of light-damaged skin. PDT also improves skin structure, reduces pigmentation spots and supports the skin in healing inflammatory skin diseases.
At our skin center, we will advise you in detail in order to tailor PDT precisely to your individual skin needs and concerns – so that you feel completely comfortable in your skin.
The most important facts in brief
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT) effectively treats skin problems such as actinic keratoses, acne, rosacea and light-induced skin ageing.
- It is a gentle, non-invasive method that visibly improves the appearance of the skin.
- PDT is generally well tolerated, although there may be a slight temporary burning or stinging sensation during light irradiation.
- Possible side effects such as redness or scaling are usually mild and subside within a few days.
- Depending on the indication, the costs are between €150 and €450. A consultation will provide information about the individual treatment plan.
What is photodynamic therapy?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a medical procedure in which light and a light-sensitive substance are combined to treat certain diseases.
For which diseases is photodynamic therapy (PDT) used?
Dermatology Indications:
Actinic keratoses: These pre-cancerous skin changes caused by UV radiation are treated safely and effectively with PDT.
Superficial basal cell carcinomas: PDT is a gentle alternative to surgical removal for this common but slow form of skin cancer.
Acne vulgaris: PDT has an anti-inflammatory effect and helps to clear the skin, particularly in the case of inflammatory, therapy-resistant acne.
Warts: In the case of persistent or multiple warts, PDT supports healing and the reduction of the viral load.
Light-damaged skin: PDT promotes the regeneration of skin that has been damaged by sun exposure and reduces visible signs of ageing such as pigmentation spots.
Cosmetic-aesthetic indications:
Photorejuvenation: PDT improves the skin’s structure, ensures a smoother complexion and refines the pores. It reduces pigmentation spots and fine lines, resulting in an overall rejuvenated appearance.
Oily skin & acne scars: By reducing sebum production and fighting inflammation, PDT is not only effective against acne, but also against the marks it leaves behind.
Rosacea: In the early stages, PDT can help to reduce redness and inflammation and calm the appearance of the skin.
Who is photodynamic therapy (PDT) suitable for?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is suitable for patients who suffer from certain dermatological skin problems and are looking for a non-invasive treatment option. It is ideal for people with skin changes caused by UV damage, infectious skin diseases or inflammatory conditions.
PDT is also suitable for patients who want targeted treatment of superficial tumors or skin conditions where other therapies are less effective. As the therapy can be customized, it is suitable for different skin types and age groups – from younger to older patients who want to optimize their skin health.
How is photodynamic therapy (PDT) carried out?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is carried out in several steps and is relatively simple and gentle. Here is the procedure:
Step 1: Preparing the skin
First, the skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove dirt, oil and other residues. In some cases, it may be necessary to lightly exfoliate the affected skin areas to improve the penetration of the photosensitizer.
Step 2: Applying the photosensitizer
A special, light-sensitive substance, known as a photosensitizer, is applied to the affected areas of skin. This substance can either be smeared directly onto the skin or administered intravenously, depending on the skin problems to be treated. The photosensitizer is absorbed by the affected cells and accumulates there.
Step 3: Exposure time
After the photosensitizer has been applied, it remains on the skin for a certain period of time (usually between 30 minutes and several hours, depending on the type of disease). During this time, the patient should avoid direct sunlight and strong light, as the photosensitizer makes the skin more sensitive to light.
Step 4: Light treatment
After the exposure time, the affected skin area is irradiated with a special light source. This light source emits light at a specific wavelength, which activates the photosensitizer. The activated photosensitizer generates a chemical process in the diseased cells that damages or kills the cells.
Step 5: Aftercare
After the treatment, the skin is cooled to soothe any irritation. Soothing creams or ointments can be applied as required. Slight redness or flaking may occur in the days following the treatment, but this is normal.
Step 5: Aftercare
In the weeks following PDT, the skin should be protected from direct sunlight as it is more sensitive. Patients usually receive comprehensive aftercare advice to support the healing process and minimize the risk of complications.
The therapy usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on the extent of the area treated. Usually, no inpatient stays are required and the treatment can be carried out on an outpatient basis.
Is photodynamic therapy (PDT) painful?
Photodynamic therapy is generally well tolerated. During light irradiation, however, there may be a slight burning, stinging or warm sensation on the skin, similar to a mild sunburn. These sensations vary from person to person, but are usually only temporary. If necessary, the skin can be cooled during treatment to increase comfort. Most patients find PDT significantly more comfortable than invasive procedures.
Are there any side effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT)?
After treatment, you may experience temporary redness, slight swelling, skin flaking or a reaction similar to sunburn. These side effects are normal and are a sign that the skin is reacting to the therapy. In rare cases, crusting or hyperpigmentation may occur, especially if the aftercare instructions are not followed. Serious side effects are extremely rare as PDT is targeted and non-invasive.
How long does healing take after PDT?
The healing time depends on the treatment area, the condition of the skin and the intensity of the therapy. As a rule, the regeneration process takes around 5 to 10 days. During this time, redness, scaling and slight crusting may occur, which gradually disappear. Many patients report a noticeably smoother and fresher skin texture after just a few days. Depending on the treatment goal, a series of applications may be advisable.
What do I have to consider after the therapy?
After PDT, the skin is sensitive to light. It is therefore essential to avoid direct sunlight for at least 48 hours and to use a high sun protection factor (SPF 50+). Sauna, solarium, intensive sports activities or irritating cosmetics should also be avoided for a few days. The skin should be gently cleansed and well moisturized. You will receive an individual aftercare recommendation directly after the treatment.
What does PDT treatment cost?
The cost of photodynamic therapy varies depending on the treatment area, indication (e.g. acne, actinic keratoses, skin rejuvenation) and number of sessions. As a rule, prices range between €150 and €450 per session.
In some medical cases, e.g. precancerous skin changes, part of the costs may be covered by health insurance. You will receive a precise assessment in a personal consultation.

Gepostet auf Sandra A.14.
