Scaly lichen
There is still no cure for psoriasis, but there are excellent treatment options
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by red patches, plaques and scales. The skin symptoms are accompanied by severe itching, which often occurs in episodes. In addition to the skin and scalp, nails and joints can also be affected. In addition, psoriasis patients have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases as well as liver and metabolic disorders. This is due to overactivity of the immune system and excessive cell turnover.
CAUSES & COURSE
Psoriasis is not contagious. Around 2-3 percent of the German population suffer from psoriasis. The main cause is inherited genes, which do not necessarily lead to the occurrence of the disease. However, stress, infectious diseases or hormonal imbalances can also lead to flare-ups if there is a genetic predisposition.
Diagnosis
For the dermatologist, the clinical picture in connection with the medical history is often sufficient for a diagnosis.
To confirm the suspected diagnosis, a skin sample can be taken and examined for histological examination.
Therapy
There is still no cure for psoriasis, but there are excellent treatment options.
As part of external therapy, medicinal creams and ointments are used, some of which are made to prescription in the pharmacy. Systemic therapies involve the use of modern therapeutic agents in the form of injections and tablets. These modulate the immune system and thus suppress the characteristic inflammatory process of psoriasis. An adapted diet can also bring relief.
