What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease that is mainly characterized by persistent redness, visible veins and inflammatory skin changes on the face. It occurs in episodes and can lead to a thickening of the skin as it progresses. The cheeks, nose, chin and forehead are usually particularly affected. Without the right treatment, rosacea can worsen, but targeted therapies can significantly improve the appearance of the skin.

Rosacea - Causes

The exact causes of rosacea are not yet fully understood, but several factors play a role. A genetic predisposition, a disturbed immune response of the skin and an increased sensitivity of the blood vessels contribute to the development.

External influences such as UV radiation, spicy food, alcohol or temperature fluctuations can also exacerbate the symptoms. Certain skin mites and bacteria are also associated with the condition. Targeted treatment can help to minimize the triggers and soothe the skin in the long term.

What to do against rosacea?

To get rosacea under control, gentle care tailored to the skin is crucial. Use mild, fragrance-free cleansing and care products to avoid irritation. Sun protection with a high sun protection factor is essential, as UV radiation can exacerbate the symptoms. In addition, known triggers such as spicy food, alcohol, hot drinks and extreme temperatures should be avoided wherever possible. A conscious lifestyle with stress-reducing measures such as meditation or yoga can also help to reduce flare-ups.

What are the typical symptoms of rosacea?

Rosacea manifests itself in various forms and can worsen over time. The most common symptoms are

  • Persistent redness (erythema): Affected areas of skin – usually cheeks, nose, forehead and chin – appear permanently reddened, similar to after a sunburn or an allergic reaction. This redness is caused by dilated blood vessels and does not disappear on its own.
  • Fine, visible veins (telangiectasia): The blood vessels in the skin dilate permanently, leaving small, red or bluish veins visible. This symptom is particularly common on the nose and cheeks.
  • Inflammatory skin changes: In some cases, small red nodules (papules) or purulent blisters (pustules) also develop, which are reminiscent of acne. Unlike acne, however, no blackheads appear.
  • Sensitive skin with burning and stinging: Many patients report an unpleasant feeling of heat, burning or stinging of the skin. It often reacts sensitively to care products, changes in the weather or touch.
  • Thickening of the skin (phymatosis): In advanced stages, the skin can thicken and become coarse-pored in certain areas, particularly on the nose. This so-called rhinophyma formation occurs more frequently in men.
  • Eye involvement (ophthalmic rosacea): Some sufferers also experience dry, irritated or reddened eyes. Inflammation of the eyelid margins or a foreign body sensation in the eye are also possible signs.

The symptoms usually occur in episodes and can be exacerbated by external stimuli. Early treatment helps to control the disease and prevent its progression.

What stimuli can trigger rosacea?

  • UV radiation: Sunlight can increase redness and trigger flare-ups.
  • Temperature changes: Cold winter air, hot summer heat or saunas irritate the skin.
  • Spicy food and hot drinks: they stimulate blood circulation and increase redness.
  • Alcohol: Red wine in particular dilates the blood vessels and can make symptoms worse.
  • Stress: Emotional stress often leads to increased skin reactions.
  • Unsuitable skin care: Perfumed or alcohol-based products can cause irritation.
  • Certain medications: creams containing cortisone or antihypertensive drugs can exacerbate rosacea.
  • Physical exertion: High-intensity sport can lead to overheating and redness.

How is rosacea diagnosed?

Rosacea is usually diagnosed by a careful skin analysis by a dermatologist. In our skin centers, we rely on a precise examination to differentiate the disease from other skin problems such as acne or allergies. Thanks to our many years of experience and state-of-the-art technologies, we can detect rosacea at an early stage and recommend an individually tailored treatment. Our holistic approach, which combines dermatology, cosmetics and nutritional advice, enables effective and sustainable treatment – for healthy and balanced skin in the long term.

How can rosacea be treated?

The treatment of rosacea requires an individual approach that is tailored to the severity and specific symptoms of the disease. In our skin centers, we offer a variety of modern treatment options to sustainably improve the appearance of our patients’ skin.

Drug therapy: Topical creams or gels with anti-inflammatory agents can be used to reduce inflammation and redness. In advanced cases, oral antibiotics are also used to control inflammatory processes.

Laser and light therapy: Our practice uses advanced technologies such as the Lumecca IPL treatment, which was specially developed to reduce vascular lesions and redness. This method aims to obliterate dilated blood vessels and thus improve the appearance of the skin.

Additional treatments: Depending on the individual skin condition, supplementary procedures such as fruit acid peels, oxygen treatments or lymphatic drainage may be useful to regenerate the skin and further optimize its appearance.

Our holistic treatment approach in our skin centers also takes into account lifestyle adjustments and skin care recommendations to minimize triggers and stabilize the skin in the long term. By combining these therapies, we aim to effectively alleviate the symptoms of rosacea and increase the well-being of our patients.

Stages of rosacea

Rosacea progresses in several stages, which can develop individually. Early treatment can help to slow down the progression and alleviate symptoms.

  • Stage 1 (rosacea erythematosa-teleangiectatica): The first signs are persistent redness on the face, particularly on the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. Fine, visible veins (telangiectasias) appear and the skin can react sensitively.
  • Stage 2 (rosacea papulopustulosa): In addition to the redness, inflammatory papules and pustules form, similar to acne, but without blackheads. The skin may appear swollen and occasionally cause a burning or stinging sensation.
  • Stage 3 (phymatous rosacea): In severe cases, there is a thickening and coarsening of the skin, particularly on the nose (rhinophyma). This stage more frequently affects men and can lead to significant skin changes.
  • Ophthalmic rosacea: In some patients, the eyes are also affected – they feel dry, burn or are reddened. In severe cases, inflammation of the conjunctiva or eyelid can occur.

Special forms of rosacea

In addition to classic rosacea, there are various special forms with specific characteristics. Ophthalmic rosacea also affects the eyes and can lead to inflammation. Rosacea fulminans occurs suddenly with severe skin changes, usually in young women. Steroid rosacea develops after prolonged use of cortisone preparations, while granulomatous rosacea is characterized by brownish-reddish papules on the eyelids and around the mouth. More severe courses such as rosacea conglobata or gram-negative rosacea require targeted therapy. Neurogenic rosacea, which is accompanied by stabbing pain, is also one of the more complex forms.

Thanks to modern diagnostic methods in our skin centers, we can precisely determine your individual rosacea form and develop an optimal treatment for you.

What should I avoid with rosacea?

To avoid rosacea flare-ups, certain triggers should be consciously avoided. Spicy foods, very hot drinks and alcohol, especially red wine, can increase blood flow to the skin and worsen redness. Stress, physical exertion and extreme temperatures – be it extreme cold or heat – can also worsen the symptoms.

Caution is alsoadvised when it comes toskin care. Products with menthol, camphor or fragrances as well as coarse-grained peelings and aggressive anti-ageing ingredients such as retinol or fruit acids can irritate sensitive skin. Instead, a mild, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic skin care product should be used. In addition, a rosacea diary can help to identify individual triggers and specifically avoid them. We will be happy to advise you in our skin centers on how you can optimally care for your skin and effectively alleviate the symptoms.

Can rosacea disappear again?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that does not usually disappear on its own, but can be easily controlled with targeted treatments and by avoiding triggers. With the right therapy, the appearance of the skin can be significantly improved and flare-ups can be minimized. Early and consistent treatment, as offered in our skin centers, helps to alleviate the symptoms in the long term.

Skin care routine for rosacea

Sensitive skin prone to redness needs particularly gentle and thoughtful care. The wrong routine or aggressive products can exacerbate rosacea symptoms, while targeted skincare helps to soothe the skin and reduce flare-ups. Use a mild, pH-neutral cleanser without fragrances, alcohol or harsh surfactants to avoid irritation. Moisturizing creams with soothing ingredients such as aloe vera or niacinamide strengthen the skin barrier and reduce redness.
Daily sun protection with a high sun protection factor (SPF 30 or higher) is essential, as UV radiation can exacerbate the symptoms.
Avoid rough scrubs, toners containing alcohol and greasy ointments, as they can further irritate the skin. Instead, use a light, non-greasy skin care product that has been specially developed for sensitive skin. At our skin centers, we will be happy to advise you individually on the best skincare routine and recommend the right products for balanced, resilient skin.

Nutrition for rosacea

An anti-inflammatory diet can help to alleviate rosacea symptoms and reduce flare-ups. We recommend fresh fruit, vegetables, omega-3-rich foods such as fish and nuts and plenty of fluids in the form of water or unsweetened tea. On the other hand, avoid highly processed, sugary and histamine-rich foods such as alcohol, hot spices, citrus fruits or aged cheese, as they can increase redness and skin irritation.
